lumiere 05: Catching Lightning
Update: January 17, 2008
I created five Lumiere videos between June 27 - July 22, 2007, in response to encouragement from fellow vlogger Andreas Haugstrup Pedersen. It was fun. My videos, along with those of many others, were linked to from videoblogging.info.
In August 2007, Andreas Haugstrup Pedersen and Brittany Shoot published the Lumiere Manifesto. I wish to publicly state that I disagree with most of the manifesto content, and that my Lumiere videos should not be construed as an endorsement of the manifesto. I am not interested in engaging in a conversation about the manifesto’s relative merits, or what I view as problematic. I simply wish to disassociate my work from it.

More video from the rare, rainy day at my mom’s house in Clarkdale, AZ. We had been watching rain come down about 15 miles away (as the crow flies, of course) when the lightning started. I thought, “I wonder if I could get that in a Lumiere video?” I asked and I received.

Did I miss it? I missed the lightning. When did it happen?
Nice moment you caught
(even though I didnt see lightning)

Bloody hell! It’s not supposed to have audio. I must have forgotten to turn it off when I exported. Oh well.
David, you did miss it. The lightning is only on for three frames! Look at the top of the left tree, right when I’m saying “you just have to sit there and shoot” - that’s when it strikes.
(now feel stupid for leaving the audio in - grumble grumble - but at least it will help y’all see the lightning)

I set the “volume” attribute to zero in the embed code on the lumiere project page. Sound removed and problem solved. :o)
And I am totally missing the lightning here!

Huh. To me the lightning is so obvious. But then I’m sort of attuned to lightning - we’ve got an affinity. Too bad I don’t have a video of the time lightning struck a lamp post 50 feet away from me. Now THAT would be a great lumiere.
I think what’s happening is you boys are bored with the scene and you look away and the lightning flashes and you miss it. You’ve got to do something about that attention span. Do you come from hunter/gatherer stock? Your eye is supposed to be drawn to motion and changes in the visual pattern you’re watching!
It is definitely there, but only for 3 frames. Just like real live lightning.

AND it’s also in the poster image, so you should know EXACTLY where to watch for it!!

Everyone keeps talking about Lumiere videos… and I’ve had some good ideas… I just have to sit down and do them.
